East Main Street Underpass opening moved back two weeks

Galesburg Director of Planning and Public Works Wayne Carl says the Jon Sibley Street Underpass on East Main Street has a new opening date. They were originally shooting for July 3 but due to overlapping work with several contractors that has been pushed back to July 18, which Carl calls an absolute “hard date.”

On the 18th a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held.

Carl says there are several finishing touches that need to be completed with some pieces dependent on others being completed.

“We’ve got decorative fencing that that goes on top of the parapet that faces beams on both sides of the railroad and have to be set from the bottom up and so the paving is in process and we need cure time on the paving. We also have asphalt that goes on top of the concrete,” Carl says.

He says there will also be decorative stamped color sidewalks and there’s a strip of sidewalk that still needs to be poured which will take about 8-10 days.

The contractor also has some painting and staining to do.

Carl praises the contractor for working with the city and BNSF, giving him credit for finishing ahead of time.
