Viola police-shooting suspect in custody – facing a slew of charges.

In the evening hours of Tuesday, June 12th, Mercer County Sheriff Deputies were conducting an investigation that involved drugs and illegal firearms in the rural Viola area.

The investigation and following incident led to one person being shot by police according to a Mercer County Sheriff Department press release. The shooting victim, 28-year-old Donovan C. Smith was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 29-year-old Alex T. Cady of Preemption was taken into custody and faces 2 counts of felon in possession of a firearm, armed violence, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Smith is not being charged at this time. The officer’s name that was involved in the shooting has not been released. The incident is under review by the Mercer and Henry County Major Crimes Task Force. First responders from Viola and New Windsor assisted the Mercer County Sheriff Deputies during the incident.
