Galesburg High School Athletic Director Jeff Flater announced in April that he will be stepping down after three years with GHS. WGIL announced in May that Flater’s replacement will be former Farmington Athletic Director Eric Matthews. Matthews spent six years in Farmington as A.D. along with then Superintendent Dr. John Asplund. Asplund just completed his first year as superintendent of Galesburg District 205. Now, Flater will be heading to Farmington as athletic director under former Galesburg Football Coach and Macomb and Dunlap District Principal Zac Chatterton. Chatterton just completed his first year as superintendent of Farmington District 265. “I’ve known Zac for quite awhile,” Flater said. “I actually coached against him his senior year when he played for Valley. I’m really looking forward to working with him – what you see is what you get. In the Farmington community, they have a lot of tradition in a lot of things. They (also) have a lot of really good coaches. I’m really looking forward to working with them.” Flater reflected on some of the success at GHS during his three years with the school. He praised Coach Mike Reynolds and the hard work the boys basketball team put in this past year making it to the Regional Championship. Flater complimented former GHS Football Coach Mike Dougherty and the team for its first playoff game win in 2016. Other successes during Flater’s time at the school was the facelift to Thiel Gymnasium – and the “true asset” that is the GHS sports boosters. As far as expectations, Flater said: “In Farmington, they have that high expectation – and they’ve achieved that. Just this past year, they took 2nd in Cheerleading, 2nd in Bass Fishing, 2nd in Track. They’ve had a lot of success over the years, and traditionally. We got to make sure we’re doing all the right things – and try to match that expectation.” Flater starts his new A.D. duties in Farmington on July 2nd.
