Monsanto merges into Bayer.

It was announced late last week that German-based Bayer closed the deal for a Monsanto merger – worth $63 billion.

The often controversial “Monsanto” company name will be dropped.  Monsanto has been a target by anti-GMO protests over the years despite million-dollar efforts to promote genetically modified crops.  It was a deal that was over two years in the making – and required the approval of more than 30 other nations. Lance Tarochione is a Technical Agronomist for Monsanto and London Mills grain and cattle farmer. He tells WGIL what the deal means for Bayer: “A lot more resources,” he said. “We’ve always been proud of the money we’ve plowed into (research and development) and new products. We’ve brought a lot of new products into the marketplace as Monsanto and that’s something Bayer would like to continue. Our innovation and successes in technology were the main reasons we were attractive to Bayer – so they don’t want that to change.” Other key brands for Monsanto include Roundup, Asgrow, Dekalb and Acceleron. Monsanto will operate independently from Bayer for an interim period while Bayer completes the sale of some of its businesses to BASF. But ultimately Bayer will be the company name and will still have its North American Headquarters based in St. Louis. Area Monsanto plants include Monmouth, Muscatine, Bloomington, and Farmer City.
