Sandburg offering kids a glance at career options this summer

Camps at Carl Sandburg College this summer are introducing kids to possible career paths.

They also host various sports camps, many of which that have already taken place, but camps in manufacturing, computer coding and a new one in the medical fields are still open for registration.

Stacey Rucker, Sandburg’s Director of Corporate and Leisure College says that it’s never too early to start thinking about career options.

“It’s a good way… to introduce students to what kind of career they might be interested in,” said Rucker. “… it’s good to find out what you don’t want to do.”

The Scrubs Academy is a new program that students who just completed grades 5th through 8th can sign up for.

It will give students the chance to explore careers in the health field over a three day period.

The first day involves a tour of Cottage Hospital including a look at their Wound Healing Center.

Day 2 students will get a similar tour of OSF St. Mary Medical Center with simulated nursing activities and a CPR session.

The final day will be on the Sandburg campus with a glow germ activity, a discussion of career options and a soft skills presentation.

The manufacturing camp supported by a grant is already full, but Rucker says they will accept names to build a waiting list.
