It’s a musical weekend full of good causes

Saturday, June 2nd there will be a Music Trivia Benefit held for Gabe Sharp, an 8 year old boy from Knoxville. Gabe recently underwent surgery for a brain tumor and is currently receiving treatment at St. Jude Hospital in Memphis. Organizer and family friend Diana Ruetz said, “We’ll also have a silent auction, a bake sale, 50/50, a wine and liquor pull….Hen House BBQ will be doing the food. It’s going to be all kinds of fun. He’s a sweet kid, and we just really want to do something to help that family.”  The benefit will be held at Harley’s Pub Saturday with doors opening at 4:00 pm and music trivia beginning at 6:00 pm.

Another musically-themed event for a good cause starts tonight with “Classic Rewind” by the Galesburg Choral Dynamics Friday, June 1st through Sunday, June 3rd. Get transported back in time with hits from the 70s and 80s on the Orpheum Theatre Stage with proceeds from the show to benefit the Knox County Habitat for Humanity. “All the funds that we’ve raised for the show thus far, and folks that attend can help raise even more,” said Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Jordan Knight. Tickets for “Classic Rewind” are $15 for adults and $7.50 for youth – 12 and under are free. Friday and Saturday’s show is at 7:30 pm – Sunday’s show starts at 2:00 pm.

For 33 years, the Knox-Galesburg Symphony has welcomed the start of summer with a free, outdoor concert on the campus of Knox College.  Saturday, June 2nd’s performance marks the final one for Maestro Bruce Polay at the helm of the orchestra. Polay’s final Masterworks performance for the Knox Galesburg Symphony before retirement was held April 28th at the Orpheum Theatre. Traditionally held before the Knox College Commencement ceremony each year, Polay tells WGIL the concert will feature some of his favorite works. “A work by Adam Copeland called “An Outdoor Overture”….and then we’re playing that wonderful “Star Wars” medley,” Polay said. “We’re doing one of my favorite scores of all time: “The Phantom of the Opera.” Souza’s “Stars and Stripes Forever”….another Souza work called the “Directorate”….my arrangement of the Knox Hymn….” and more. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair for the show. Concessions will be available but you are also free to bring food of your own. The free performance will be held starting at 5:00 pm on June 2nd and in case of rain will be in the T. Fleming Fieldhouse.
