GPD seizes cocaine following reported burglary

A Galesburg man was arrested Wednesday morning for possession of cocaine following a reported burglary on South Soangetaha Road.

Galesburg police officers were dispatched to the 400-block of Soangetaha at 3:11 a.m on Wednesday after receiving a call that a burglary was in progress at an apartment. Officers were informed that loud banging was heard and that a male subject had exited the reported apartment wearing only underwear.

According to reports, officers arrived on scene and spoke with the subject, 39-year-old Antonio M. Chavez, who told officers that he had seen a burglar enter his apartment through a glass sliding door. He advised police and told them that the burglar may still be inside his residence.

It was noted that police asked Chavez if he wanted the to complete a safety check of the apartment, to look for the burglar, and he refused to let them look through his residence. Chavez’s behavior gave officers the indication that he was under the influence. Reports detail that Chavez sat on the ground outside with a blank stare while looking at his phone and it was noted he had difficulty talking with police.

While checking out the glass side door, officers spoke with neighbors – who informed police that a woman and child had been spotted at the apartment over the weekend, but the neighbors were uncertain if they were there now.

Officers on the scene were given the green light to conduct a well being check of the premise to verify that no one was in the apartment.

Reports indicate officers observed on the kitchen table, in plain sight, a baggie of suspected cocaine. Also found were several rolled up dollar bills, a photo I.D. of Chavez’s, and a butter knife – all with suspected cocaine residue. Officers also found a glass pipe with burnt drug residue.

Chavez was arrested and transported to the Knox County Jail and turned over to jail staff as he awaited an appearance before a judge.

At the Public Safety Building, the suspected drugs field tested positive for cocaine, and weighed in at 7.7 grams.
