Galesburg Council approves moving military vehicle to Lincoln Park memorial

Galesburg City Council last night gave the go-ahead Monday night for a historic military vehicle to be set near the Veteran’s Memorial at Lincoln Park. The amphibious LVT vehicle has been stationed in front of the former American Legion building but needed a new home with the sale of the building.

Aldermen held no discussion and approved the item unanimously.

Veteran and Navy Seal Bill Tomlin spoke surrounded by a group of local veterans in support of the relocation.

He said that future generations need a reminder of the sacrifices that are needed to realize a free society.

He told council that most veterans will agree that military action is the “least desirable solution to conflict.”

“But to prevent military action we must boldly display the willingness to engage in them,” Tomlin says. “If a young person’s only exposure to military equipment is in a video game they will be seriously misinformed.”

Alderman Wayne Allen says the LVT will be sandblasted, primed and painted there will be a platform underneath and rod iron fencing around the perimeter.

Allen says the vehicle’s inclusion in the memorial is not for the city as much as it’s for “veterans”.

He disagrees with those who have called the vehicle a piece of junk, insisting it’s a “piece of history.”

Council also held some discussion on a revised edition of minimum housing standards and a new rental licensing program.
