Galesburg Council to consider buying West Theater

Galesburg Alderman tonight could approve an agreement for the city to purchase what was formerly the West Theater on South Prairie Street.

About a year ago Michael Spinks who used to operate Jersey’s Bar on Cherry Street bought the property for $100, hoping to launch a business venture at the property.

City administration is proposing to buy for $10,000, demolish the building and incorporate the space into the planned re-imagining of Park Plaza.

Council documents say that a sidewalk will be built connecting Park Plaza to South Prairie, along with some landscaping and benches.

Alderman could also approve a related item, hiring Klingner and Associates to do a slate of tasks like asbestos inspection, drawing demolition specifications and observing construction with a combined price tag of $16,100.

Council could also approve demolishing three residences around town that are either “dangerous” or not “economically feasible to restore.”

Speaking of demolition the council will also consider tearing down three properties in town that are dilapidated to point of being dangerous or not cost effective for rehab.

If Council says yes then 277 Lincoln Street, 686 S. Henderson Street and 1154 E. Losey Street would come down for a price of about $32,000.

Alderman will also consider rezoning the former Galesburg Nissan location on 120 N. Broad, which would make way for a possible relocation of Webber Rental and Supply.
