Galesburg council to revisit discussion on rental and housing standards

The Galesburg City Council tonight will hold a work session to discuss a few items including rental and housing standards.

Nearly two months ago Alderman tabled a new rental licensing program and updates to the minimum housing standards.

Views expressed at that time varied from feelings that the new standards were too stringent and some thought they were too lenient. Alderman Russell Fleming on March 5th said some of the housing standards amounted to “babysitting.”

The rental inspection program that was proposed to trade in a rental registration program for one where landlords would have to acquire a license and would guarantee every rental unit in the city would be inspected at least every five years.

It also would introduce a classification system where landlords who showed a history of meeting standards would qualify for self inspection.

Alderman Jeremy Karlin expressed skepticism that landlords could be trusted to be totally truthful on self inspections.

Ultimately Alderman couldn’t come to an agreement and tonight will apparently re-evaluate how to proceed.

They’ll also talk about, but not vote on relocating an amphibious LVT vehicle that was at the American Legion Hall at Lincoln Park.
