Bergner’s parent to close all stores, including at Sandburg Mall

The rumors are officially true — the parent company of Bergner’s is closing all its stores.

Milwaukee-based Bon-Ton Stores says a successful bidder has emerged for the company following a February bankruptcy filing — and it’s a hedge fund looking to liquidate all stores, and close them — pending approval from a bankruptcy court judge expected Wednesday.

That would include Bergner’s stores in this area, including at Sandburg Mall. The Bergner’s closure here would mean that the last anchor store at the mall will soon close.

It’s not clear when the closure would take place, but company CEO Bill Tracy says a wind-down of the company’s operations starts Wednesday, including liquidation sales.

Broadcast reports indicate employees of Younker’s stores in the Quad Cities were told Tuesday that closures would take place in ten to 12 weeks.

It’s not clear how many employees would be impacted locally.

Tracy says he’s disappointed in the outcome, because the company tried to identify bidders interested in keeping Bergner’s, Younker’s, Carson’s, and the other brands open.

While the closure of the Galesburg Bergner’s would mean the last anchor store at Sandburg Mall will soon close along with JC Penney, there have been some recent announcements of businesses coming to Galesburg, including Five-Below, Harbor Freight Tools, and Pet Smart, with rumors of others.
