Two arrested in Willard Street incident

A juvenile and adult were arrested on different felony charges following an interaction with Galesburg Police.

At around 11:20 p.m. Friday, officers responded to the 1700-block of Willard for a noise complaint and a subject in a yard screaming. The yard was on the same property that had previously seen police presence when officers were called out for a “shots fired” call the night before. In that case officers had found four spent shell casings.

According to police reports, a witness told officers that a woman was driving around the area throwing eggs at vehicles.

Officers observed a van on the west side of the residence to be running and occupied. As police approached the van, a second vehicle approached from Lane Avenue. Officers observed three subjects in the second vehicle – a blue Buick.

After shining a spotlight on the Buick, officers were able to identify two of the three subjects inside. It was noted that officers observed the driver and front seat passenger to be appeared to be concealing something.

Officers made contact with the individuals in the Buick. The driver, 21-year-old Malik L. Morris of Galesburg, told officers he was moving his vehicle to the back of the residence. He told officers he didn’t believe there was any drugs or weapons in the car. Dispatch notified officers that Morris did not have a valid drivers license.

Officers observed the front seat passenger smoking a cigarette and when asked to give his age, the individual told officers he was 14 years old. Officers removed the juvenile from the vehicle and searched him, finding a gun tucked in a pair of shorts underneath some drooping jeans.

The silver .38 caliber gun – with a round loaded in the chamber – was removed from the juvenile’s shorts and he was arrested. Officers would later find .22 ammo inside the pockets of the teen.

Morris was removed from the vehicle and searched. Officers would find a small plastic bag win the front right pocket of Morris’ pants with some suspected drugs in it. Morris indicated to officers that the drugs were methamphetamine.

The third individual was searched, but no contraband was found on them and they were not arrested.

Morris was taken to the Knox County Jail for processing while the juvenile was taken to the Mary Davis Home.

Reports indicate Morris was arrested on a Class 3 Felony of possession of under five grams of methamphetamine. The 14-year-old juvenile was arrested on Class 4 felony of unlawful use of a weapon.
