Plenty of projects in Galesburg to improve city streets

The City of Galesburg is in the third of a three year plan for capital bond projects the City Council approved for in 2015. Those projects have included the replacement of the Farnham Street bridge and the redevelopment of Seminary Street from the Bickerdyke Bridge to Fremont.  Several brick streets in town will be resurfaced with concrete and have new curb and gutters installed. The first brick street the city has sent bids out on is Prairie Street between Dayton and Park Lane. Other brick streets set for reconstruction include Lombard from Brooks Street to South Street, Berrien Street from Henderson to Holton Street, and Brooks Street from Lombard to Oak Street.

Director of Planning & Public Works for the City of Galesburg, Wayne Carl says the projects will be staggered throughout the year and will be completed by the end of 2018. Another upcoming project will be replacing the City’s storm sewer. “We have a very old storm sewer system that runs just south of Knox College,” Carl said. “We’ll be doing the first phase of that project this year. So hopefully we’ll have that done by June. But that’s replacing a very old stone and brick storm sewer – it used to have a wooden bottom in it, it’s deteriorated, so there is no bottom in it. So it’s good to get that project going.” According to Carl, the storm sewer runs through the Knox College soccer field – down Monmouth Boulevard, across the tracks and into Cedar Creek.

In addition to the construction on Whitesboro Street, the East Main Street Underpass, and the upcoming Farnham Street Bridge replacement, Carl gave WGIL updates on several other upcoming projects. Work is being done on Gale Village Drive – the road that runs west of Aldis on North Seminary. The street is being extending 800 feet in order to add more commercial lots. The 2nd phase of lead water service line replacements are upcoming – another 500 lines are set to be replaced that will require an occasional lane closure.

The City of Galesburg is not only rebuilding several city streets this year, but also rebuilding personnel within the Public Works Department. Carl says that the Illinois Department of Transportation has been hiring for several positions recently, and the City will be in need of a new Assistant City Engineer. “We are in the process of looking for an Assistant City Engineer,” Carl added. “It’s a good opportunity. We’re looking for someone with four to six years experience working in the civil engineering field – particularly transportation is what we’re looking for.”
