Works continues on East Main Street Underpass

Work on the East Main Street underpass near downtown Galesburg continued a few weeks ago.

Contractors completed the pour and place of the retaining walls two weeks ago. Modular retaining walls on the north side of the underpass will be going in within the next week.

Director of Planning & Public Works for the City of Galesburg, Wayne Carl tells WGIL, if weather’s decent – work should continue smoothly. “It’s actually really good right now. They did all the heavy lifting last year with the bridge install,” Carl said.

“Right before the end of the year they set those outside, concrete fascia beams – you may have seen it on the East side where it says ‘Welcome to Galesburg’ . I had a meeting with them last week, and it looks like we’ll be on track to open the bridge by July 4th.”

Carl added that all the drainage work and underground work was done at the end of last year and is fully operational.

Contractors are also working on lighting – so underneath will be lit up, and the fascia that says “Welcome to Galesburg” will be lit up as well.

The state resolution to name the East Main Street underpass the “Reverend John Sibley Sr. Underpass” could pass after the Illinois General Assembly resumes again in April. The resolution moved from the Illinois Senate’s Assignments Committee to its Transportation Committee on March 14.
