Park Plaza plans soon to be finalized.

Redesign plans for Park Plaza in Galesburg are soon to be finalized. The City of Galesburg is currently in talks with acquiring one or possibly two of the adjacent building to Park Plaza due to them structurally unsound. Director of Planning and Public Works for the City, Wayne Carl hopes to have the plans and negotiating wrapped up within the next two weeks. As it sits now, the lot has two enter only and two exit only access points – and drivers have to snake around to find parking. Carl says the new design will be much more driver-friendly. “It’ll be one open lot,” Carl said. “They’ll be an “in & out” on both ends and a two-way access road that runs through there. For the most part it’ll be all open – it’ll have all 90 degree parking. It’ll be a much easier parking lot to travel than what’s already there. There will also be about ten more spaces than what we have there now.” Carl says the lot will go up to the back of the businesses on Cherry street to the back of the Weinberg Arcade. A couple of strips for landscaping and lighting will also be installed. Carl says ideally the City would like to get the project contracted out soon – and get started at the end of May or the first part of June, so it’s done by the end of the year.
