Robert Nichols retiring from law enforcement after three-decade career

Today is the final day on duty for a Galesburg police officer who’s been on the job for nearly three decades.Officer Robert Nichols will retire after today after serving on the Galesburg force for about 20 years with eight years previously on the Monmouth Police Department.

Nichols is a product of Western Illinois through and through, graduating from Galesburg High School, obtaining an associate’s degree with a law enforcement emphasis from Sandburg and then graduating from WIU.

Nichols told the Register Mail with both he and his wife retiring, “I just thought this was a good time to do something different.”

Even though he’s retiring from law enforcement he’ll still have a role preparing future officers as he’ll continue to teach a class with GHS’ Vocational Center.

And if setting his sights on retirement wasn’t enough to make a big day for Nichols, today is also his 52nd birthday.

Nichols signed off this afternoon for the final time at 3:12 p.m.
