Two individuals receive medical attention after accidental shootings

Two individuals were shot in separate accidents Sunday.

At just after 9:30 a.m. police officers, GHAS, and Fire Department personnel responded to the Galesburg Police Department Range on Lake Storey Drive.

The firing range was being used by the Western Illinois Police Training Unit for 40 hour mandatory firearms training.

According to police reports, a Monmouth Auxiliary Police Officer had his gun jam with a double feed – with two rounds in the chamber – and attempted to clear it. The gun went off, striking another auxiliary officer.

Reports indicate the bullet traveled through both legs of the victim. The victim also was aware that the accidental shooter was having gun issues before the gun went off.

No life-threatening injuries were sustained and no arrests were made.

A second incident was reported around 1:15 p.m. where a man accidentally shot himself.

He informed officers he was attempting to clear the chamber of his gun when he slipped and the gun accidentally went off, firing a bullet through his hand.

Officers verified that the individual was a valid FOID card holder.

He was being treated with non-life threatening injuries.
