Humane Society’s video of dogs in chairs goes viral

The Knox County Humane Society’s video of shelter dogs lounging in comfortable chairs has taken the internet by storm this week. The video shared on their Facebook page Monday has generated over 16 million views and has been covered by national media programs and outlets like The Today Show, Good Morning America and USA Today.

It started with Buster Brown, a dog who Volunteer Shelter Director Erin Buckmaster decribes as kind of a mascot for the Knox County Humane Society

About a year ago MSI Inc., run by Buckmaster’s daughter and son-in-law donated some office furniture.

Buckmaster thought a big comfy chair that was a part of the load would be perfect for Buster who likes to sit in chairs even those that people are sitting in.

But soon other shelter dogs were jealous and donations of chairs were being used by many of the kennel’s pets.

“Who would’ve thought? Really it’s a pretty simple thing to put some chairs out because that’s where dogs lay when you’re not looking at home anyway,” Buckmaster says.

She says the Humane Society has received calls from other shelters around the nation looking to implement old chairs for the dogs they care for.

Buckmaster says they’ve seen so many donations of chairs they even put a pair in the cat room.
` She does add she hopes that she’s not “creating a monster” since not necessarily ever family wants pets on the furniture.
