Seminary Street Pub fined for liquor violation, Uptown Bar’s case continued

Two cases appeared before Galesburg Liquor Commissioner, Mayor John Pritchard Wednesday with one of them being settled.

Seminary Street Pub will pay a $400 fine for a violation of the city’s liquor ordinance.

The Pub was cited by Galesburg officers on Jan. 14 when they observed a bartender pour a shot and serve a drink after 2 a.m. cut off time.

Richard Spitzig was the Pub’s liquor license holder at the time of the incident, but Spitzig has since passed away.

Attorney Jim Harrell appeared at the hearing representing Spitzig’s estate.

While The Pub was barred from serving alcohol in August 2017 due to several violations of serving underage individuals, it reopened with Spitzig holding the license, who is the brother-in-law of former Pub operator and current building owner Shirley Chu.

City Attorney Brad Nolden says that punishment is based on history of the license holder.

Then Steven Coleman II, owner of Uptown Bar and Grill was scheduled to have a hearing based on an incident from the same evening as the Pub’s violation.

Police reports read that officers detected a burnt cannabis smell coming from the establishment and observed a woman smoking in the premises.

Officers also found a male security guard at the front door drinking an alcoholic beverage.

Coleman’s case was continued until Mar. 7 at 10 a.m. which Coleman says he expects his attorneys to be in attendance for.
