County board approves special prosecutor, payment of emergency heating services

The Knox County Board approved the appointment of the special prosecutor pursuing the time clock case in Knox County Circuit Court.

Jeff W. DeJoode, Elizabeth L. Duvall, and the firm of March, McMillan, Dejoode and Duvall P-C were approved to represent the county and treasurer’s office.

The board held no discussion on this before voting to approve it with only board member Lyle Johnson voting against it saying he believed that the county would lose the case.

The board also rejected a salary adjustment for the Nursing Home Administrator, board member Bob Bondi was one of the few who voted in favor of the raise.

“Under her contract we had an obligation and certainly in the strictest term of salary we probably do not, but… she would be the only person within the Nursing Home Department that [did] not [have] consideration for 2016.”

The county board approved Gerald R. Buckman and Joey K. Tusek to the Elba-Salem Fire Protection District, as well as approving the bid documentation for compensation analysis and study.

In the finance committee meeting from this month, County Clerk Scott Erickson set a 60 day window for bids – with the final day being April 30th.

The board approved the payment to Mechanical Services Inc for emergency heating in the courthouse. Because of an oversight with the heating units, there was not sufficient heat this winter in the courthouse.

MSI installed three gas furnaces, filters, gas piping and several other pieces of equipment in the courthouse for a total of nearly $40,991.39.

Board member Dick Conklin expressed his wishes that the board would pursue reimbursement from the engineers who had installed the failed units.

“I still would like to see if we couldn’t get some kind of combination from the engineering firm, maybe Mechanical Services because we were relying on somebody else’s advice,” said Conklin. “So I agreed to pay the bill, but I’d like to see if we can’t get some kind of gentleman’s agreement to assist with that.”

The board approved several other items, including payment to Otto Baum for over $33,506.80 and to Hein Construction for $1,260.

The board also approved bid and bring back items for IT Storage Server and for replacing the wireless network at the nursing home.
