93rd District candidates seeking support in state rep race

Candidates running for the 93rd District State Representative seat are touting endorsements and raising money.

The Republican incumbent Norine Hammond faces opposition in the Mar. 20 primary from a retired Army Sergeant and former youth minister, Joshua Griffith.

Griffith has pulled endorsements from conservative political groups including Taxpayers United of America and Illinois Family Action, a Christian conservative group.

Taxpayers United of America cited Hammond’s vote for a tax increase, which Griffith has cited as a major driver in his decision to run.

A release announcing the group’s endorsement says they are excited for Griffith to stand up for their “Christian Conservative values” in Springfield.

The presumptive Democratic nominee in the race, John Curtis has been endorsed by the Illinois Democratic County Chairs’ Association and Citizen Action Illinois.

CAI says they have led campaigns for “lower utility rates, fair taxes, affordable and quality healthcare and campaign finance reforms.” Curtis says he’s proud to have their support.

None of these groups have matched their endorsements with donations. Hammond leads in money with about $300,000 on hand although she had about $226,000 left from her victory in 2016.

John Curtis had around $40,000 left from his 2016 campaign and now has almost $100,000 on hand. Joshua Griffith in his first run at office has about $9,000 on hand.
