Knox County Farm Bureau celebrates its 100th year.

The Knox County Farm Bureau was first formed a century ago. What began as an organization mainly for insurance purposes, according to Knox County President Grant Strom, has grown into a membership-driven non-profit that helps give farmers a voice. Today, the Illinois Farm Bureau advocates for agriculture, provides leadership opportunities, and assists farmers with legislative issues. On January 20th, the Knox County Farm Bureau held it’s 100th annual meeting. Executive Director of the Knox County Farm Bureau, Hailey Weyhrich tells WGIL they plan on hosting a number of events throughout their 100th year. “We have a summer event planned that’s going to be like a membership appreciation picnic where we hope to bring in a lot of our members just for a meal,” Weyhrich said. “A lot of our members are always involved in Cattleman’s or Pork Producers so sometimes they don’t get to have the meal. So we hope to celebrate them in that way; and there will be other family fun events that day as well.” The organization’s Committees and Task Forces provide members with many programs, functions and opportunities that benefit Knox County’s farmers, their operations, the ag industry, and the entire community. Benefits of becoming a member include discounts and opportunities at dozens of local businesses – from automotive and fitness, to local restaurants, home goods, and entertainment. Today, the Knox County Farm Bureau has nearly 850 farm members and over 2,600 total members. “Even if you’re not a farmer, there’s a ton of member benefits,” Weyhrich added. “Now Illinois Farm Bureau just rolled out an app. You can put in your membership number and it will ding every time you drive by a location that will give you a discount. That’s one of the big draws. On top of that, you’re still giving agriculture a voice.” Part of that voice, according to Knox County Farm Bureau President Grant Strom is advice and information.  Getting feedback on an issue like solar farms or wind farms is an advantage members can have.
