Great Decisions foreign policy discussions start tonight at Monmouth College

Tonight starts the Great Decisions series at Monmouth College, which has been held at the school for now 38 years. The Great Decisions series is designed as a forum where both the academic community and public can meet, learn and discuss public affairs.

Every week a speaker with some experience or expertise in a subject gives a short presentation and then a discussion is opened up for about an hour.

The first topic will be “The Waning of Pax Americana” but other topics in the weeks to come will include Russia’s foreign policy, the fragile democracy in South Africa and Turkey.

The series is organized by the Foreign Policy Association, an over century-old group that works to promote understanding of global issues.

While Monmouth is the nearest location hosting these eight lectures, the same topics are being covered at sites around the state country including in Galena, Illinois.

Great Decisions will take place every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Moot Board Room in the college’s Center for Science and Business.

Emeritus Professor of Political Science Ira Smolensky will introduce the series, being its longtime co-host.
