Felony charges for Galesburg man who fled to former dealership rooftop.

In October, Galesburg police responded to a call related to an attempted home invasion on West North Street in Galesburg followed by a “shots fired” call.According to police reports, when the homeowner on North Street did not allow 24 year old Austin J.M. Baker in, he and 25 year old Clevon Dortch Jr. fled. The homeowner then attempted to track down the two in a vehicle when Baker shot at the vehicle with a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun. On foot, the two fled down North Broad Street – Dortch then hid in a crevice between the former Galesburg Lincoln Mercury and former Galesburg Flower Company – Baker climbed to the rooftop of the former car dealership. GPD recovered the shotgun on the roof of the building. After the two where apprehended by Galesburg Police, they began exchanging bird calls to one another while Baker was descending the building in police custody. This week, in a plea deal, represented by public defender Daniel O’Brien, Baker plead guilty to felony attempted armed home invasion and felony possession of a weapon by a felon. Circuit Judge Paul Mangieri handed down a 5-year sentence for Baker to be ran at the same time. Aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a weapon with defaced identification markings were dismissed. Baker will serve 50% of the sentence, or 27 months in prison; he received credit for 106 days served in jail, two years of parole, and $267 in court fines. Represented by public defender David Hanson, Dortch’s pretrial hearing is scheduled for February 2nd with Circuit Court Judge Scott Shiplett. He’s charged with armed home invasion – a Class 1 felony, possession of a firearm by a felon – a Class 3 felony and possession of a defaced firearm – a Class 3 felony. Bond for Dortch has been set at $150,000. A motion for a reduced bond was denied.
