Galesburg population expected to lose 547 by 2021

Galesburg will lose over 500 residents by 2021 if data from a GIS mapping firm is correct.Galesburg alderman were together for an update on the parks and recreation masterplan on Monday night when Mahit Maheswarmi, from the firm preparing the plan, showed on a powerpoint Galesburg’s projected demographics in three years.

The trend shows a 0.35 percent loss of population annually running from 2016 to 2021.

The data comes from a private GIS mapping firm called Esri.

Maheshwari says that Esri pulls data from a number of sources to get these findings.

“They pull data from different sources like the United States Census and other places and then consolidate that information,” Maheswari says. “So we pull data from their source and this is how it comes.”

The data Maheshwari presented brokedown also showed that the city is projected to lose both families and individuals but families are being lost at a slightly faster rate.

Most measures of population are projected to decrease a half percent every year until 2021 including number of households, number of families, median age and population density.

Average size of household was projected to stay roughly the same.
