Spend your weekend celebrating Sandurg’s 140th birthday

While it’s a relatively quiet weekend, there’s still ways to have fun – and enjoy some tunes while celebrating the birthday of Galesburg’s favorite son.

The 140th birthday party for Galesburg native, and renown poet and musician Carl Sandburg is going on this weekend with New York based musician David Nagler coming to town.

Nagler has performed with the likes of Steve Earle, Rosanne Cash, Joan Baez, Fred Armisen, among many others and is the musical director for Wesley Stacey’s Cabinet of Wonders – which had been featured on NPR.

Martha Downey, the Superintendent with Carl Sandburg State Historic Site, tells WGIL that Nagler will be performing original music set to Sandburg’s famous work.

He will be performing original music put to Sandburg’s “Chicago Poems”

Nagler has called the project, “a true labor of love.” Adding that he is “fortunate to have been able to set to music poetry that, 100 years later, is still beautiful, powerful, and relevant.”

Sandburg’s Chicago Poems were published in 1916 to great acclaim.

The Concert begins at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. There is no charge but a $5 donation is suggested.

The concert is sponsored by the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association, Galesburg Community Foundation, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
