Galva Concert series coming in summer thanks to foundation grant

There will be plenty of music in Galva this summer.

The Galva Arts Council has announced that they’ve been approved for a matching grant of up to $25,000 to present a free concert series at Wiley Park.

John Taylor, isn’t a member of the council, but spearheaded the application for Galva to get the award.

Taylor says that they submitted proposals that highlight Galva in the vein of the three tenets the Levitt Foundation looks for in giving their AMP awards; how it would amplify community pride, how live music could resident enrich lives and the importance of their public places.

He said to WGIL, “Beyond the music I want to just work on building the community here in this area… make it a place that people are proud to live and be part of the community.”

As of yet, Taylor is unsure who the musical acts will be but says it could be a mix of regional and international artists.

The concerts are set to be held every Sunday from Memorial Day weekend until July 29.

Taylor says there will be some fundraising events to try to bring in $12,500 for the matching grant.

The other half of public donations must come in the form of volunteering time and resources.

The best method to sign up for any variety of giving is to log on to http://www.galvaartscouncil.org/ .

The Mortimer and Mimi Levitt Foundation from where the grant comes aims to “strengthen the social fabric of America” through helping communities use underused public spaces into venues for live music.
