2018 to bring an end to construction and new leadership at 205

Looking ahead to some of this next years’ possible news stories…

Construction has become a way of life for Galesburg motorists.

The East Main Street Underpass which had a ground breaking in August 2016 after nearly two years of delays.

For all of 2017 contractors continued their work, even through springtime torrential rains and periods where crews worked for 48 continuous hours.

Director of Planning and Public Works Wayne Carl originally said August 2018 is the targeted date for an opening but has since said it could be closer to June.

Also coming up for the City of Galesburg, in just the next few months will be the completion of their comprehensive plan and parks and recreation master plans.

The City Council approved the taking on of the plan in December, costing $150,000 to hire Houseal Lavigne a consulting firm.

The plan gives city leaders guidance on short-term and long-term goals, which efforts made to include opinions of a range of leaders and citizens.
Galesburg hasn’t updated its comprehensive plan since 1999.

Additionally, leadership roles will need filled in 2018.

First, there a number of leadership positions in local education including vacancies for principal at Nielsen Elementary, Lombard Middle School, King Elementary and President of Carl Sandburg College.

Matt LeClere resigned from Nielson in October after 15 years, Nick Sutton is leaving Lombard to become Stark County Superintendent and Joan Hoschek will retire from King after six years in that role.

Lori Sundberg, the alumna who went on to be Carl Sandburg’s top administrator is taking a new job and will leave Sandburg in June.

Sundberg said she had planned on retiring from the Galesburg community college, but when the chance to lead Kirkwood, with over 36,000 students opened up, she decided to accept the offer.

The Sandburg Broad of Trustees meet in January to start searching for her replacement.

Also Mark Kleine will challenge Rep. Cheri Bustos for her job in November, although he has to win a primary in March first.

The Galesburg businessman is running as a Republican against three-term Democratic incumbent Bustos.
