Knoxville school board approves letter of understanding

The District 202 Board of Education held a special meeting last night where the sole purpose was for the discussion and approval of an agreement with the Knoxville Education Association regarding the union’s communal sick-leave bank.

Superintendent Steve Wilder tells WGIL that the bank was established for teachers to donate sick-leave days into, and – in the event a teacher needed to take an emergency leave – could apply and use the accumulated communal days.

Wilder says that at the beginning of the school year teachers decide if they want to opt-in by donating at least one sick-leave day. He says that the letter of understanding would open another window to opt-in.

New teachers in District 202 have 15 days of sick-leave while teachers with 10 years in Knoxville have 16 days, and with 20 years they have 17.

Because newer teachers hired during the school year miss this window, the board approved the letter of understanding which would open a second window at the end of the semester – before the start of the next.
