Asplund discusses the new school year – his first in 205

On Tuesday classes start at District 205, and while it’ll be the first day for many students in new grades – even new schools – it’ll be the first day for Dr. John Asplund as Superintendent.

Dr. Asplund was hired over the summer to replace Ralph Grimm who retired after two years with the district – coming from Farmington over in Fulton County.

He said he wants to spend some time rediscovering what is going on in the district and seeing where the needs are greatest.

Asplund tells WGIL that the district will hold 10 community outreach forums so members of the community can come in and share their concerns and desires for the direction the district will head, saying him and the school district are “going to be a huge part of the community so it’s very important that the community has a big say in what goes on in the schools. We really, genuinely want that input to see where we want to put our resources and marshal our efforts to make sure we’re going in the right direction.”

As of yet no dates or locations are scheduled for the public forums.

In addition Asplund highlighted a few of the non-traditional programs that Galesburg students have access to that he is particularly excited to work with, citing his excitement about the Computer Support Internship program, and the English Second Language classes that are offered.

He also touched on the vocational courses offered at the high school, “if we can do what we can to get kids the skills – whether it be in automotive or CNC or whatever it is – if we can get those kids skills to have jobs that’s what we’re here for!”
