Galesburg Alderman met last night and approved a pilot program to let Carl Sandburg College students, staff and faculty ride Galesburg Transit free for a year.
The pilot run of the program will run from August 2017 to July 2018.
Ward 4 Alderman Corine Anderson inquired if the hours the bus ran would serve later classes at the community college
Representatives from Sandburg say that while that the bus stops running at 5:30, a majority of their classes are held between 9 and 2:30 p.m.
Ward 6 Alderman Wayne Allen joined the other five members present in giving their yes to the pilot program
“I think it’s great we’re looking at a program like this,” Allen says. “It’s probably overdue.”
Sandburg obtained $6,300 in grants to fund the program.
Council also approved a handful of bids.
One was to replace the skateboard ramps at Kiwanis Skate Park, which Paneltech was approved to do for $8,000.
Also it was approved to bring wi-fi capabilities to Allison Campground.
Information Systems Supervisor Orlee Lucero says beyond the $5,000 for the initial equipment this will be no additional cost to the city.
Ward 3 Alderman Russell Fleming asked Parks and Rec Tony Oligney-Estill if campers have refused to come back because there’s no internet connection.
