New superintendent brings 15 years of experience to 205

This week the outgoing District 205 school board approved the contract for their new superintendent Dr. John Asplund. Dr. Asplund, a ROWVA graduate, got his start in education by teaching at Knoxville High School, and most recently has been superintendent at Farmington Central for the last six years. He has 15 years of experience as a superintendent, in both smaller rural districts and in larger more wealthy districts where he says the problems are much more different.

“I’ve worked in very wealthy districts,” says Asplund, “and I have found in wealthy districts people invent problems. Even when money isn’t a problem they find other problems and that’s actually a lot more frustrating because the don’t spend enough time appreciating what they have and its really frustrating to say you know hey we’re here for the kids lets really try to focus what we’re doing, why are we dealing with these problems people just make up.”

Asplund tells WGIL that 205 will be the largest district he’ll have been in charge of, but says there are similarities to the other districts he’s worked in.
