Market Alley Wine owner moving and looking for buyer

Patrons of Market Alley Wines no doubt are drinking their sorrows away after hearing news the shop owner would be moving out of state.

Susan Kaufman Schuytema the owner and general manager of Market Alley Wines is looking for interested buyers in her Monmouth business.

She made the announcement Wednesday on Facebook that her husband Paul, the current Director of Community and Economic Development for the city of Monmouth had accepted a job in the upper peninsula of Michigan.

She says Paul will be starting his new job on May 22nd, but the lease for Market Alley doesn’t end until July 31st.

Schuytema says she would consider opening another wine shop in the upper peninsula if the market is right for it, “…certainly if I don’t do a wine shop I’d do something entrepreneurial. I can’t imagine doing working for someone again, and not drinking wine on the job.”

The popular Monmouth wine shop has a loyal fan base and the news no doubt has stirred both happy and sad emotions for many.

Schuytema says she feels horrible with how devastated her patrons feel about the news and that the community has a life of it’s own.

She said “the amount of support that local people give to small businesses is absolutely amazing. And I would not be here, and this business would not be successful if it weren’t for so many great people… and people who really embrace that shop local idea because it really does matter.”

Market Alley Wines opened in June of 2011 and since become a popular spot on Monmouth’s square.
