Hospital helicopter to be based in Galesburg

One of the four “Life Flight” helicopters operated by Peoria-based OSF Health Care is being re-located on a permanent basis from to Galesburg.

That’s according to OSF officials, who say the “Life Flight” helicopter will land for the first time at seven a-m tomorrow at OSF Saint Mary Medical Center.

Hospital officials say 80 percent of all patients transported by the Peoria-based helicopter come from the Galesburg, Monmouth, Kewanee, and Quad Cities areas, so it makes sense to base one of the “air ambulances” here.

OSF Healthcare officials say the goal would be to cut down the response time for those patients.

The helicopter is one of four Life Flight air ambulances in its fleet, OSF Health Care says it also employs 15 pilots, along with dozens of support personnel, with up to two patients able to be transported at a time.
