Knoxville City Council shoots down levy increase, looking for police station addition

The Knoxville City Council met last night in hopes of coming to a decision on a proposed tax levy increase but instead kept the levy same as last year.
The proposal in place would have raised property taxes by an estimated 4.5% which equals just under a $17 increase on a $100,000 home.

Over the next year an increase in Equalized Assessed Value is expected to generate roughly $15,000.
With a decision needing to be made on the on the levy, the council brainstormed to try and find common ground.

An idea by 3rd Ward Alderman Toby Myers seemed to resonate with everyone:

“So, we’re talking $15,000 if get it all. I asked about the add-on to the police station was $20,000, so we’ll wait on that a year,” Myers says. “If we’ve got to get lean, we’ve got to get lean.”

Between cuts and the additional funds from rising EAV Knoxville will aim for the police station addition next year.

The next Knoxville City Council meeting is scheduled for Jan. 3rd.
