Tax levy on final read at Galesburg council meeting tonight

Galesburg aldermen are expected to vote on the 2016 property tax levy at tonight’s meeting.
A seven percent increase to the aggregate portion of the overall levy will require a Truth-in-Taxation hearing just prior to the regularly scheduled meeting. Though there is an increase, the proposal is to keep the overall levy the same as last year, meaning tax payers should not see an increase on their bills.

Equalized Assessed Value on city homes is estimated to have dropped roughly seven percent, as well.

Also on tonight’s agenda is a proposed code amendment that would decriminalize possession of less than 10 grams of cannabis.

Current code is set at 2.5 grams, but under new state statute, those caught with 10 grams or less are to be issued a citation.

A section of city code that would allow law enforcement to search a residents trash is also on the agenda. Both items are first read. Tonight’s hearing is set for 6:15 p.m. and the regular meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall
