Ameren, Illinois will begin a multi-year upgrade of electric and natural gas meters for the majority of the listening area’s residences and businesses.
Knox, Warren, Henry, Henderson and Mercer counties are among the areas that will begin to see new technology with upgrades beginning in January.
In a news release, Ameren says new meters will provide more convenient technology for customers to view their usage.
Division Director Daetta Jones says the meters come with automated switches and sensors to record usage and better detect and isolate outages.
The upgrade installs will take roughly 10 to 15 minutes each and customers won’t need to be present and won’t be charged anything additional for the installation.
There are more than 1.2 million electric and 816,000 natural gas Ameren customers throughout central and southern Illinois.
