Budget discussion to resume at tonight’s council work session

In about a month, Galesburg aldermen are expected to look at finalizing their budget plans for the 2017 fiscal year.

Tonight, another discussion about the spending plan is scheduled for City Council.

The city is still facing a nearly $2 million deficit that needs to be sorted out amid the process.

The way council plans to do that is by fine combing through various city departments to discuss capital improvement project options, as well as ways to reduce expenditures through mostly attrition and position reductions.

Much of that process has been taking place throughout the year. Whether a police and fire pension issue that has skyrocketed costs for the city will be included in leveling this year’s deficit has yet to be seen.

Tonight’s work session is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Erickson Conference Room at City Hall.
