Ghosts of Galesburg brings stories of old to the streets tonight

For the fifth year, the Galesburg Public Library and Galesburg Historical Society will be joining together to put on a special Halloween-esque program around town tonight.

The “Ghosts of Galesburg” walk gets underway from the library starting at 6:30 p.m.

Assistant Library Director Jane Easterly tells Galesburg’s Evening News on WGIL the event spawned from a “Jack the Ripper” walk she went on in London. The spooky jaunt sparked the idea to bring something similar to Galesburg.

“Galesburg has so much history, I thought ‘wouldn’t it be fun to do a historical walk in Galesburg?,”‘ Easterly says. “So, I started it, thought it would be a one time thing, but it’s very popular. People start asking us about it way before the actual event. So, we’ve continued to do it.”

On the walk, actors portray “ghosts” of people who have had a connection to the town — many of whom speak at a building they allegedly haunt.

In years past, featured ghosts have included Charles Osgood, a local photographer who supposedly haunts Music Makers, “Roxanne” the ghost of Cherry Street Restaurant and Bar and Guy Gard, a former grocer who spooks Attic Antiques.

The walk is about a mile and a half and Easterly says it takes most an hour to an hour and 15 minutes to complete.

The library has asked those in attendance to dress for the weather and to bring a flashlight.
