Man wanted in car wash carjacking arrested; bond set at $575,000

A Galesburg man who allegedly stole a car in an armed stick up last week turned himself into police this morning.

Twenty-one-year-old Juan Garcia was one of three assailants involved in an armed robbery at WaterWorks Car Wash, October 13.

Two 17 year old male juveniles were arrested and Garcia had been wanted on two warrants — one for the armed robbery which is set at $500,000 and one for failing to appear in a separate drug case. That warrant has a $75,000 attachment.

The man robbed last Wednesday told police that the person now identified as Garcia pointed a handgun at him while he was washing his car. Garcia then entered the vehicle and drove away, while the juveniles fled — one on foot and one on a bicycle. Smaller items like cash, a cell phone and wallet were taken as well.

According to Knox County Circuit Court records, Garcia is charged with Class X aggravated vehicular hijacking and a felony count of theft. The Class X charge has a maximum prison sentence of 30 years, but because a gun was involved there is a mandatory 15 year add on.

Judge William Beal appointed a public defender this afternoon in court. Garcia’s next court date is Friday at 11 a.m.
