Monday’s temp breaks record set in 1950

Today broke a heat record in Galesburg set sixty-six years ago.The Galesburg Municipal Airport temperature gauge registered 88 degrees Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service website.  The previous record was set October 17, 1950 at 87 degrees.

Meteorologist Patrick Bak told WGIL this morning the first part of the week will be warmer than average before settling into the 60s after Wednesday.

“Currently Galesburg Airport (has) 14 mph gusts and 25 mph out of the south,” Bak says. “That may get closer to 30-40 mph gusts by later this afternoon.”

Bak says tomorrow should be about five to-10 degrees cooler. He says mid or lower 60’s is the norm for this time of year.

But normal temperatures residents will see at the end of this week will be short-lived.

“But it actually looks like we’re going to warm up again next week. And it looks like the chunk of the rest of October (is) above or well above normal again,” Bak says. “So, summer’s not wanting to give up too quickly this year.”

Local residents also saw strong winds up to 38 miles per hour today.

Bak says the warm temperatures are a part of above normal levels in the Eastern part of the country, especially in the Midwest and the Great Lakes area.
