Galesburg treasurer decision on final read tonight

The Galesburg city treasurer could see a new role after tonight, depending on what aldermen decide to do with the position.

The past two regular council meetings, aldermen have deliberated whether to change the position to one that is part-time and appointed.

An ordinance to make that reduction is on final read tonight, as is an ordinance that would set the salary at $25,000. City Manager Todd Thompson has recommended appointing the finance director to the role, if council makes the change.

Ward 3 Alderman Russell Fleming said last meeting, he’s not in favor of that. He’s argued to keep the position full-time and elected.

“I don’t think there’s been enough discussion on what the duties — to keep it separated — the duties the treasurer are,” Fleming said. “I feel strongly they should remain independent of the finance department.”

Ward 7 Alderman Jeremy Karlin has spoke in favor of the change, citing the money saver for the city. Former Treasurer Tom Wilson has also voiced his opinion.

Two weeks ago, he warned council about the ramifications of the decision in regard to the subsequent deputy treasurer.

Wilson argues the deputy treasurer may take more than a simple vote to abolish. Further, a complete abolition of the treasurer would require a voter referenda

Council will discuss the matter tonight at 6:30 p.m. inside City Hall.
