Health department says bed bug rumors debunked at GHS

Galesburg High School is not infested with bed bugs, according to local health officials.

Some rumors have been flying around District 205 since last month, when two students in two separate cases reported to the district that they had bed bugs.

Knox County Director of Health Protection Sam Jarvis tells WGIL that since that time, District 205 has taken all of the right steps to confirm the little pests haven’t infested the school.

“We directed them to the state health department website that has information about controlling bed bugs and other things to look for,” Jarvis says. “We also consulted with IDPH’s special pest program and then there thoughts, as well. They took all of that information and then that’s when they did the information release to all parents and guardians. I think that’s kind of what kicked off a lot of questions.”

Jarvis feels the district did a great job presenting information to parents once the initial cases were reported. He says he has received only two phone calls from parents in the district who had questions about the rumored infestation.

Jarvis says in his talks with the state’s health department, they have concluded school’s aren’t a place where bed bugs generally infest.
