Your weekend: Alzheimer’s walk, Sandburg’s 50th birthday top weekend events

Two events highlighting the weekend have long lasting roots in the community.
Carl Sandburg College began with a voter referendum and has now grown into a lauded community college with inextricable ties to the Galesburg area.

They’re celebrating their 50th anniversary this weekend with a slate of events on Saturday including free tours, a retiree reception and a picnic from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Sandburg President Dr. Lori Sundberg says it’s all happening on the school campus.

“It’s going to be a huge day,” Sundberg says. “We want people to come out. It’s all free. Please, come and bring your family and some chairs for things to do. We’ll have a picnic on top of it.”

Another event starting tomorrow morning  is the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Joanne Whitney has been a part of the Walk ever since it’s genesis in Knox County 24 years ago.

Whitney wasn’t prompted to join by having someone close suffer from Alzheimer’s but says she’s heard countless heartbreaking stories along the way.

It’s totally free to walk and you can register ahead of time online at alz.org/walk or on the day of at the Lake Storey Pavilion.

However those interested in a t-shirt will need to collect $100 to go towards the Central Illinois chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Money collected will go towards both funding research for a cure and providing assistance for Central Illinois families.
