Abingdon Community Festival brings Ag related fun Thursday

Temperatures are starting to cool and September is now only days away. Just as the seasons always change, the Abingdon Community Festival returns once again this year.

Co-organizer Ashley Anderson says the community fest has been going on for some 80 years or so. In 2016, the goal of festival seems to be synonymous with past years and that is to simply gather the community and get them involved with “Ag related projects.”

“It’s one of those [sic] that I know my kids look forward to every year of riding the rides, eating funnel cakes and going out there and trying to catch a chicken at the chicken scramble or a pig at the pig scramble, they look forward to seeing their friends,” Anderson says. “It’s the same way for adults and it’s about bringing the community together.”

The festival takes place Thursday through Monday at the Monroe Street festival grounds.

Along with the scramble’s, shows highlighting vegetables, arts and crafts, livestock and more will take place. On Sunday, a demo derby and Power Wheels demo derby for kids will be on hand.

Free gate days are Thursday, Saturday and Monday. The remaining days there is a gate charge of $8.
