Galesburg woman gifts $100,000 to area organizations

A Galesburg woman who passed away in January of last year has officially gifted $100,000 to three area non-profits as a part of her estate.

Thelma Pennington was the donor.

A note from Lion’s Club member Dave Pearson says they were included in a check distribution yesterday alongside Calvary Assembly of God and Habitat for Humanity.

In the e-mail, Pearson says the Lions Club once helped Pennington and her family buy eye glasses when they needed help and it was a gesture that was not forgotten.

Pennington worked at both the former Galesburg Mental Health Center and Zeller Mental Helath Center in Peoria for more than 26 years. In Galesburg, she was a member of OAKS, the Galesburg Women’s Club and of Calvary Assembly.

According to the Galesburg Register-Mail, the Western Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross was also gifted $100,000, but the organization has not been able to yet accept the funds and assure the money would be used locally.
