A Galesburg man held in the Knox County jail on gun and coke charges is awaiting a bond hearing tomorrow afternoon.

According to police reports, officers arrested 35-year-old James P. Coleman in the early morning hours today after responding to reports of shots fired in the 500 block of Phillips Street.

Police found a vehicle matching a witness’ description in a North Whitesboro Street driveway. When officers approached the driver, later identified as Coleman, he fled on foot, jumping two fences.

Inside the vehicle, officers discovered a loaded handgun under the driver’s seat with two rounds missing. On the passenger’s seat, police found a sock holding more than 150 grams of cocaine and more than $5,000 cash.

Coleman was found hiding in a nearby back yard. Booking records show Coleman is charged with possession of a firearm as a felon, possession of more than 15 grams of coke and other charges.

Assistant State’s Attorney Sabrina Stroops says additional charges are planned.
