Moffitt backing Trump as local lawmakers line up for presidential election

With yesterday’s four primary wins Hillary Clinton clinched the Democratic nomination for president and will now square off with presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump in the general election.

Some GOP leaders have shied away from a Trump endorsement or done so half-heartedly but both a Republican congressional hopeful and a veteran lawmaker are backing the bombastic businessman.

Outgoing State Rep. Don Moffitt and candidate for the 17th District U.S. House seat Patrick Harlan both announced their support today.

Moffitt tells WGIL he disagrees with Trump on some issues but will support his party’s nominee.

“On a lot of issues I would agree with Donald Trump,” Moffitt says. “Not on all of them. He was not my first choice or my second choice.”

Harlan says the choice is obvious because Clinton shouldn’t be eligible to run due to “all the scandals she’s involved with.”

“We’re all going to have to get behind Donald Trump to make sure Hillary Clinton doesn’t get elected for president in November,” Harlan says.

Harlan’s November opponent Democratic Congresswoman Cheri Bustos issued a statement congratulating Clinton on her win last night and restated her support.

Bustos called the night “historic”, saying Clinton’s presumptive nomination has “proved the American dream is alive.”

The congresswoman’s backing comes with little surprise after she got behind the former secretary of state last year. In a 2015 interview with WGIL, Bustos said she likes that Clinton is “proven” and that she “appreciates what she stands for.”
