National Weather Service: expect average summer temps

As the summer months draw nearer, temps are heating up. But don’t expect the heat to get out of control this summer.

Patrick Bak of the National Weather Service says by and large, he’s predicting an average summer for Knox County as far as temperature and precipitation.

He sees temps sticking around their averages, with early June having highs in the high 70s, lows in the upper 50s and late June having highs in the mid 80s and lows in the mid 60s.

“Looks like some periods where maybe it’s a little bit warmer than that,” Bak says, “but overall it looks like it is likely to be a fairly normal summer.”

Bak says the average precipitation in this area runs about three and a half inches per month in June, July and August. April and May are the wetter months, he says, noting that Galesburg has seen a good deal of rain in this early summer/late spring season.

“Even within one county you may have an area where they have gotten two or three inches in a day, and then someone 20 miles away didn’t even see a drop,”Bak adds. “So, these storms when they pop up, they can be wide ranging.”

Bak says that summer temps could be affected by El Niño temperature patterns in the equatorial Pacific that can move weather patterns and make areas colder or warmer than average.

He says El Niño aided in this year’s fairly mild winter.
