Galva father and son arrested in Memorial Day stabbing

A Galva father and son are held in the Henry County Jail after police responded to reports of a stabbing on Memorial Day.

According to a Galva Police Department news release, 44-year-old Clair E. Whiteside is charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery. His father, 66-year-old Steven D. Whiteside, is accused of concealing or aiding a fugitive.

Galva police and Stark County Ambulance responded Monday night to the 100 block of North West 2nd Street in Galva where a man was found suffering from a stab wound to the chest. He was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in Kewanee and later to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Witnesses said the two Galva men were responsible. Kewanee police arrested the father and son at a Fairview Homes apartment.

Galva Police Chief Kraig Townsend said the stabbing is believed to be an escalation of an “ongoing feud” between the involved parties.

Henry County Judge Dana McReynolds set bond Tuesday morning at $1.5 million for Clair Whiteside and $250,000 for Steven Whiteside. They await a hearing at 1 p.m. June 6 in Cambridge.
